Purse: Help Me God

This year we have been studying the life of David. We have journeyed through the books of 1 & 2 Samuel, 1 & 2 Kings, and 1 & 2 Chronicles. From there we moved on to the books of Psalms. God calls David a man after His own heart. This has catapulted David to be a recognized hero of the faith. But this has also pushed him to be considered above us, better than us. And yet as we looked through scriptures, we saw that David encountered times in his life where he chose to sin. Through David’s life, he constantly tripped himself into sins. Yet when he finally looked at his sin and then back into the holiness of God, David would worship God, repent and change the course of his own actions. This is what we see makes David a man after the heart of God. It is not that David’s heart was pure and holy, but that David’s inner desire, David’s ultimate goal was to be close to God. Here at St Joe, we will always and only preach what is found in scripture. If the bible talks about giving, that is what we will preach and teach. Which leads us to 1 Chronicles 29. This event in David’s life is one of his spiritual highlights. I wish this was the last thing we knew of David. Unfortunately, in the next few weeks we will see how David’s life ended. We looked at this passage a few weeks ago. Then we looked at what kind of legacy are we leaving? How can we inspire our kids to have a real faith in God? We must start with ourselves. Get rid of religion and get into a real relationship with Jesus. Put our own faith into practice. But there is more in this passage that I think we need to address. And here we see that David really wanted to build the new temple to worship and honor God. Yet God told David, you are not the one to build the temple. We need to recognize that David has a great response to God’s statement. David didn’t get upset; he didn’t take offense. David did not pout or get angry at God. It doesn’t seem that David even gets jealous of his son Solomon who would have the honor of building this temple. Instead, David accepted God’s decision and put his who life into making sure the preparations would be made. This generous attitude and gracious spirit of wholehearted support stand as a great and noble monument to the legacy of this man of God. I have tried to present David to you just the way the Bible does, as a real man who loved God, but often failed God. In spite of all his sin and failure, David was still a man after God’s own heart. And I think that one of the qualities of his life that made him such was his humility. David’s humility will be on display today as we see it expressed in his forgiving spirit.
